NRC portable barges are transported as stacked pairs and handled as individual lifts.  For use the barge pairs, each consisting of one port barge and one starboard barge, must be locked together into a single unit usingthe gear provided. Barges must be operated as locked pairs. The portable barges are two 8’ x 40’ sectionalaluminum barges that are designed for easy over-road transportation.  The portable barge set rigidly connects to provide a multi purpose spill response platform.  The portable barge set can carry a VTU, miscellaneous equipment and 238 bbl of recovered material.  The portable barges can also be used for support, skimming, boom deployment and cleaning operations.
